Harry Polland/Robert Morales Scholarship Award Winner – Jennifer Franco

Jennifer Franco is the daughter of Teamsters Local 350 member Helen Franco (Recology Sunset) and Carpet, Linoleum & Soft Tile Workers Local Union 12 member Dagoberto Franco.  She graduated this past June from South San Francisco High School and will be attending San Diego State University to pursue her bachelor’s degree in communications.

“Human interactions are really interesting” says Jennifer and taking a look at her resume, you’d see that it is no surprise that her path leads towards communications. Her volunteer experience spans from her hometown of South San Francisco, where she’s tutored small children, to Nicaragua, where she’s had volunteer educational experiences.

Coming from a family with a union background, she had this to say about her own take on labor unions. “The essence of the worker should never be belittled or degraded. I wrote about the importance of unions because they give families a sense of livelihood and I feel that unions are important because you’re less likely to be exploited by your employer or by corporations. That solidarity is just what keeps people going”

Teamsters Local 350 and Joint Council 7 wish Jennifer Franco nothing but the best of luck in college. Congratulations on winning the Harry Poland/Robert Morales Scholarship.
