Teamster Family Spotlight: Carter Le Awarded Teamsters Scholarship
Thanks to the generosity of local unions across the country and the establishment of the Teamsters Scholarship Fund under General President Sean M. O’Brien, Teamsters Local 350 is proud to announce that four children of Local 350 members were awarded scholarships this year.
Among those recipients is Carter Le, son of Brother Thach Le, a material handler at Recology Pier 96 in San Francisco who has proudly been a member of Teamsters Local 350 since September 24, 2007.
A graduate of San Francisco’s Lowell High School, Carter was accepted to several universities both within California and out of state. Ultimately, he chose to remain close to home and plans to attend San Francisco State University, where he will study kinesiology.
Carter is already following a path of service. A union member with SEIU, he works at a rehabilitation center as a certified nursing assistant. His interest in healthcare grew through a school club that gave him opportunities to speak with medical professionals and learn about their work.
“I saw how they were able to give back and help others, and that made me really interested,” Carter said.
He hopes studying kinesiology will serve as a stepping stone toward a broader career in medicine, with a particular interest in cardiovascular care.
For Brother Thach, Carter’s scholarship represents not only an educational opportunity, but also the culmination of decades of hard work, sacrifice and dedication to his family.
A native of Vietnam and a jeweler by trade, Thach left his home country to build a new life in the United States. After settling in San Francisco, he worked at a bakery while simultaneously attending City College of San Francisco to take English courses. During that time, he applied for a position at Recology, where he went on to build a career as a material handler at the company’s Pier 96 facility.
“I feel that I am making a difference by helping save the environment and taking care of people,” Thach said
His appreciation for the environment extends beyond the workplace. An avid fisherman in Vietnam, he continues to enjoy the outdoors and regularly takes his family hiking and fishing whenever possible.
Thach is equally passionate about Teamsters Local 350 and the dignity and security his union membership has provided his family.
“They have always fought for me, respected us and brought dignity to our work,” he said. “I am extremely proud of Carter, and I am extremely proud to be a Teamsters Local 350 member and have access to this great opportunity.”
Carter shares his father’s appreciation for the role unions have played in their family’s lives.
“I am grateful for all the benefits the Teamsters have provided my family, especially our medical benefits,” Carter said. “Unions are necessary.”
Teamsters Local 350 congratulates Carter on this well-deserved scholarship and wishes him continued success as he begins the next chapter of his education. His accomplishments are a proud reflection of his family’s sacrifice, his father’s years of service and the lasting difference union membership can make across generations.
